Belgium, an open economy with challenges and potential
Our country has a strong export position in the world and consequently has considerable potential for attracting economic growth opportunities. If Belgium is to make full use of that potential, we must address four essential challenges.
1. Maintain position as export country

2. Tap new export markets

The small surface area, the limited internal market and the central location within West European as distribution centre for transport to the rest of the continent are the main factors behind our strong export culture.

3. Support and develop key industries

4. Remain an international decision-making centre

Our country must, in an increasingly competitive environment, take initiatives to retain its strong export position by tapping into new export markets. In this way, key industries such as pharma, biotech and e-commerce receive the necessary support and Brussels remains a leading diplomatic centre at the heart of Europe.
