Mobility fair for the airport community
Never before has climate been so high on the agenda. The roads around the major cities are becoming increasingly congested, and this has a negative impact on the accessibility of our major economic centres. As one of the largest employment centres in Belgium, Brussels Airport wants to collaborate in sustainable mobility solutions for the wider region.
One of the objectives in the airport’s sustainability strategy is improving the modal split. In 2018, 30 % of the passengers and staff came to the airport by public transport, bicycle or on foot. We would like to increase this share to 50% by 2040.
Unknown makes unloved
That is why we organised a mobility fair on 20 September as part of the Mobility Week. It was aimed specifically at employees, partners and neighbours of the airport and was intended to familiarise them with alternatives to the private car. Because you can’t expect people to use what they do not know about.
Bespoke mobility solutions
Public transport companies De Lijn and NBS were both present. De Lijn introduced the new trambus that will connect the north of Brussels with the airport from December. NMBS turned the spotlight on its S-network around Brussels and also presented some interesting season ticket formulas for the employees. Skipr and Olympus Mobility explained their mobility apps, which make it super easy to undertake multi and inter-modal journeys. Velo, BiketoWork and o2o were present to promote the use of the bicycle for commuting, while Poppy and DriveNow explained the advantages of the shared car. Office on Wheels attended with a genuine office bus, which allows commuting time to be used as work time.
We at Brussels Airport took advantage of the occasion to present our electric bus for the transport of passengers on the tarmac, one of the many initiatives we have implemented to achieve our ambitions in the area of sustainable development.
There was considerable interest in the Mobility Marketplace. Hopefully, this will lead to a significant decline in the share of the car in commuter traffic to the airport.
Our name may be Brussels Airport, but actually we are more of an intermodal hub than an airport. In addition to the 70,000 air passengers we greet every day, we also welcome thousands of commuters who make use of the wide range of public transport at the airport.
